Aritst Julie Daniels |
A one-off opportunity to purchase a celebratory painting by Julie Daniels is available to Downing members. '1709-1809' is one of a series of eight paintings, each depicting 100 years of the University's history by representing a variety of treasures belonging to Cambridge colleges and libraries. '1709-1809' is unique as Downing is the only college founded during the period. Among the artefacts in the neo-classically themed composition is Wilkins' vision for Downing Chapel.
The artist Julie Daniels read Modern Languages at Cambridge, before studying art in Florence and continuing under the guidance of Jorge Alberto Gonzalez, a Cuban painter resident in Baltimore, USA. She lives near Lucca, in Italy, and is currently preparing work for galleries in Stockholm and Munich. Commenting on her work, she said: “I work in oils on canvas or panel, focusing mainly on the figure or still-lives, and use a painting medium discovered by Jacques Maroger, painter and former curator of the Louvre in the early 20th century, who claimed to have found the secret formulas used by Old Masters such as Titian, Rubens, Van Dyck and Velasquez. Normally, I tend to mix traditional techniques with modern constructs in my work, but this project called for a fully finished formal celebratory painting. Working with objects charged with such national importance was a real privilege.”
